I saw these on etsy a couple of weeks ago and couldn't stop thinking about them. So I knew that I had to make some for myself. I have such a weakness for mason jars.
Do you want to make your own?
Here's what you will need:
Mason Jar (I used a wide mouth pint jar)
Sharpie or pen
Hole Punch (The one I have is for scrapbooking, but it cuts through metal and leather. I think it is called a crop-a-dile. I use it all the time for various things.)
1/4" Rubber Grommets (I bought mine here) I am sure you can find them at the hardware store too.

1/4" Rubber Grommets (I bought mine here) I am sure you can find them at the hardware store too.
Take one of the grommets and place it where you want it to go on the top. I started off in the middle, but for the rest of the ones that I did I made the hole closer to one side.
This is where you want to punch your hole. You could also use a drill to make your hole, but I am a little afraid of power tools.
Now punch a hole in the top where you marked.
My hole was not large enough so I kept punching around the original hole to enlarge the hole to the right size.
It doesn't have to be exact. It just needs to be large enough so that the grommet can be squeezed through that hole. You also don't want the hole too big or the grommet will move around too much.
Now take the grommet and work it into the hole. Be careful with the hole in the middle. The edges are sharp.
Stick a straw through the hole and put the top on the jar. You are ready to enjoy a nice cold beverage.
You can see from this photo that I placed the hole more towards the edge on the one in the bottom right hand corner. I actually preferred drinking from this one. I also made some smaller ones for the kids, but they liked drinking from the larger ones. The small ones are so cute though. I have stainless steel straws that we use for smoothies that worked perfectly. The striped straws are biodegradable paper ones found here.

I love this idea. We have taken to using mason jars for drnking glasses and this will be perfect for summer...no bugs in the lemonade! I would love it if you would share this on Tout It Tuesday. http://www.claimingourspace.com/2012/05/tout-it-tuesday-7.html
Great idea. I love drinking from mason jars. This would give me an excuse to take them everywhere I go.
This is really cool. You must have an awesome hole punch if it cuts through mason jar lids! Thanks for sharing at our Handmade Tuesdays party.
What a great idea!!!! I just seen these on GroopDealz and was smitten but now that you made this tutorial, I'm definitely going to have to try making some =)

Thanks for sharing on Tout It Tuesday!
Love it! Where did you get the stainless steel straws?
Do the straws stay in place pretty well? I use a reusable Starbucks cup because the straws have a stopper on the end so they can't fall out. I'd like to use these though, they are so much cuter and I'd be proud to carry around something I made myself!
love this idea! and your take on it with the rubber grommets!
Any ideas for making the hole without your awesome hole puncher?
I have found just a regular hold paper hole punch works too! I made a few for my daughter (11 months) to drink smoothies out of. I really like the idea of the rubber grommets though, I am going to have to give those a try.
Do they not rust, though?
I have washed mine in the dishwasher several times and have had no problems with rust. I just make sure to dry it really well before putting it up. If you don't have a hole punch, you can also use a drill to make the hole.
where can i find the stainless steel straws
The seals shouldn't rust because they are made for canning. The bands do rust over time, but the bands are supposed to only be used for processing and home canned goods aren't supposed to be stored with the bands on them. You can buy one-piece plastic screw on lids for canning jars as well as one-piece metal seal lids (the seal and band are one solid piece) but they are a little more expensive. I might try it with the plastic lids. Then you could drill the hole and it may not need the rubber grommet. Are the rubber grommets non-toxic and food safe?
Found a link for the straws:

I ordered my straws from Amazon, but your link looks like the same ones that I have. I did not do any research about the grommets. I was not too worried about them since I was using the straw and I never fill my drink all the way to the top. So I didn't feel like my drink would be in contact with the grommet, but it is a valid concern.
Fantastic idea! Now I don't have to buy my kids expensive reusable cup or cringe at the plastic they'd use on our trips to Starbucks. Thank you!
This is funny I got upset when I seen my son use my good lids to poke holes in them for this but I did tell him to use the ones that I had used before. But I love your idea.
Hole punch... brilliant. I have been shying away from this project because of the drill too. Thanks!
The regular hole punch didn't work. You have to have a Big Bite or a drill. I'm going to try the drill... don't have a Big Bite.
Hole puncher is the way to go. Too much clean up with the drill. I found reusable straws with stoppers at Starbucks- expensive but convenient.
Hi, I see from the pictures these are the canning lids with the white plastic underneath. I recently found out those are not PBA free. Perhaps punch through plain pewter lids - that cuts the work out of bothering with a lid AND a ring anyway =)
I am just reading your post on my Laptop at midnight and I was thinking about how well it will work on the new my Laptop. Fleeting thought. Anyway thanks!
Love it love it love it and it's solo cute. Thanks for the post!

The stainless steel and glass are great for drinking out of but I would run from the grommet...there is no way of knowing what they are made of unless it states "pure rubber" and then research if rubber is non toxic. Stick the grommet in your mouth and suck on it and see if it doesn't leach yuck onto your taste buds. Then another pinner states canning lids are not PBA free (This is very troubling news to me that I should have known...must reseach) but in reality NO plastic is safe for internal use. Another pinner was thinking of using pewter lids??!! Pewter is made of tin, copper and in many cases lead. Run!! Sorry, I was excited when I first saw this setup as I only drink from glass or stainless steel if there is no plastic rim or lid which is never, but this idea probably isn't safe, esp for children. I have done a lot of research on plastic and it literally, slowly killing us,causing many health problems along the way.
Where did you find your stainless straws? Please email me at decolores3@yahoo.com
Lead is poisonous; that's why in the old days when only the rich had lead kitchenware, they were dying from lead poisoning. Cute idea with the jars and if you don't fill them to the top, you wouldn't have to worry about the PBA in the lid.
Pewter kitchenware, I meant to say.
This is a sweet idea. I wish you had posted a link to the maker on etsy.
wouldn't you need a small pinhole somewhere in the lid to let air in to make it easier to drink? Seems without a small hole you'd lose suction.
This is so cool, couldn't you use a drill also, I don't have a hole punch like that, but if a drill is used people need to make sure no fragments of metal are left.
Amazing! I love your creativity in producing these kind of stuff. This is very useful and cute as well. This is genius, imagine, you create a reusable cup with a mason jar, just fantastic. I'll try creating my own cup too!
Love the idea. Have tried it using the rubber grommet, but the rubber smeed so bad I had to throw it away. Will have to find another way to make these.
My engineer roommate, who is a mechanical engineer and has worked with all sorts of plastics, rubbers, ets... knowing their compounds, agrees rubber may not be the best choice.
The link to the ones on Amazon is for vinyl ones which are better. May be able to find out the compound starbucks uses and find gaskets of some type made from that. For that matter, the plumbing aisle is probably a good place to start.
I love this idea, as my mother does better with covered cups, and it seems they all have different types of lids, and they never make it back together all at once.
If you don't want to hasle with 2 part lids you can buy the one part ones, which I don't believe are made of pewter anymore, find somewhere that carries canning supplies for bulk canneries. Like preppers, they have lots of different kind of lids, and honestly, if you use a drill bit the right size for the straw, you shouldn't need the rubber or vinyl gasket.
Great idea I want to try. Thanks for sharing Franq
A cute idea would be to paint the top with chalkboard paint. You could then write your name on it. No more lost drinks, or, not knowing which one is yours.
